Held one rung all window — pattern: Incumbent bolt-on.

The short version A usage meter was bolted onto a seat you already pay for — the subscription is no longer the whole bill.

The verdict

Adobe Firefly is a generative-credit meter strapped onto Creative Cloud's per-seat business rather than a new usage-priced product. It sat at hard allotment well before the study window and did not cross rungs from January 2025 to today — it tightened within the rung. Standalone Firefly subscriptions launched in early 2025 with fixed monthly credit buckets; enforcement hardened mid-2025, cutting new-subscriber allotments and putting a paywall at the ceiling; and a later price increase rebranded All Apps as Creative Cloud Pro with a larger premium-credit allowance. Adobe's own FAQ is unambiguous that this is a hard stop, not auto-billed overage: at the limit you wait for the monthly reset or buy an add-on pack. That keeps it firmly at hard allotment.

What changed

  • Mar 19, 2026 · Policy change · Adobe runs recurring 'unlimited generations' promos that temporarily SUSPEND the generative-credit meter (Mar 19 - Apr 22, 2026: 'After April 22, 2026, all users will return to consuming credits'; a further offer through May 2027 for sign-ups by May 21, 2026). Intermittently switching the meter off is itself a pricing-convention event.
  • Jun 17, 2025 · Policy change · Worldwide enforcement of credit limits hardens: new subscribers' monthly allotment cut to 25 credits (vs 500/1,000 for pre-June-17 subscribers); at the limit users hit a paywall and must wait for reset or buy an add-on — a hard stop, no auto-billed overage.
  • May 15, 2025 · Price change · Creative Cloud price increase: All Apps becomes 'Creative Cloud Pro' at $69.99/mo (up from $59.99) with unlimited standard generations + 4,000 premium credits/mo (up from 1,000); CC Standard at $54.99/mo with 25 credits/mo. Dollar price and meter both move, but the hard-allotment mechanic is unchanged.

Where it's headed

The mechanic has held for over two years, so the likely next move is further within-rung tightening — smaller default allotments or higher add-on pack prices — rather than a shift to auto-billed overage.
