  1. Jan 2025 Rung 2 · Soft meter
  2. Sep 2025 → now Rung 3 · Hard allotment Credit meter bolted onto paid plans for premium AI

Moved across the continuum this window — pattern: Incumbent bolt-on.

The short version A usage meter was bolted onto a seat you already pay for — the subscription is no longer the whole bill.

The verdict

Gamma is a clean soft-to-hard traverse. In January 2025 both paid plans (Plus, Pro) advertised unlimited AI creation — credits were a Free-plan concept only, and paid usage was gated by per-generation token caps, not a billing ceiling (a soft meter). That unlimited framing still held in a June 2025 snapshot. By September 2025 Gamma had bolted a real credit meter onto paid plans: Agent, advanced models, and API now draw down a monthly credit allotment, formalized on the November 2025 pricing page alongside a credit-heavy Ultra tier. Today it is an unambiguous hard stop — run out and AI actions block (non-AI editing continues), with manual top-up packs and no auto-billed overage. Seat prices stayed; the meter hardened on top.

What changed

  • Sep 1, 2025 · Meter adopted · Credit meter bolted onto paid plans: the official credits help doc now states that on paid plans standard presentations/images are 'included' (fair-use floor) but the plan's monthly credits are consumed by Agent, Ultra/advanced AI models, and API access — i.e. premium AI now sits behind a hard monthly credit allotment (Plus 1,000). Earliest archived snapshot of this hybrid model. (archive)

Where it's headed

With explicit per-plan allotments and manual top-ups already in place, any next step would more likely be a credit burn-rate adjustment or a metered-overage option than a return to unlimited — though nothing public points that way yet.
