Held one rung all window — pattern: Incumbent bolt-on.

The short version A usage meter was bolted onto a seat you already pay for — the subscription is no longer the whole bill.

The verdict

Surfer entered 2025 as a credit-allotment content-SEO product: Essential and Scale tiers each carried finite, numbered ceilings on content-editor and AI articles, with paid add-on packs the only way past the cap — a hard stop, not a soft meter. On June 17, 2025 it bolted a distinct usage-priced meter on top, launching AI Tracker as an add-on scaling by AI-search-visibility prompt count. Around Q2 2026 it overhauled the ladder — Discovery / Standard / Pro / Peace of Mind / Enterprise, dropped monthly billing, renamed credits to 'documents,' and folded visibility tracking into the plans — but the core mechanic held: finite caps plus paid add-ons for overflow. It stays at hard allotment throughout; only the top tier is soft-metered.

What changed

  • Jan 29, 2026 · Credit burn-rate repricing · Plan-system change: meter re-denominated from AI credits to 'Documents'; legacy credits docs apply only to pre-change subscribers; the on-demand AI-credit purchase article now 404s.
  • Jun 17, 2025 · Meter adopted · Surfer launched AI Tracker as a separately-metered add-on bolted onto the seat product — $95/mo for 25 AI-search-visibility prompts, $195/mo for 100, $495/mo for 300, scaling by prompt count; a usage-priced meter on top of the credit allotments.

Where it's headed

The incumbent keeps re-skinning tiers around AI search while preserving the document-cap-plus-add-on mechanic. A move into auto-billed overage or pure per-action pricing looks unlikely on current evidence.
