- Jan 2025 Rung 4 · Metered overage
- Now Rung 4 · Metered overage
Held one rung all window — pattern: Leapfrog.
The short version It was born usage-priced, standing beside the seat business rather than replacing it.
The verdict
Zapier's core automation product has billed metered overage since January 2024 — above the task allotment, Zaps keep running and auto-bill at 1.25x, capped at 3x — and that core didn't move rungs across the window. The 2025 move was a leapfrog: Zapier launched Agents on a separate "Activities" credit system, a new usage-priced AI product stood up beside the seat/task business. Crucially, Agents are a hard allotment (they stop at the cap, no overage), the opposite of the core Task meter — so Zapier now spans two rungs at once rather than walking its existing product rightward.

What changed
- Jan 8, 2024 · Meter adopted · Zapier introduced pay-per-task overage billing: above the plan's task allotment, Zaps keep running and auto-bill each extra task at 1.25x the base per-task rate (capped at 3x the allotment) — moving the core product from a hard task ceiling to metered overage.
